the four medicines, sweetgrass, sage, cedar and tobacco, are drawn down to their roots across the back. sage grows up both sleeves from root to bloom, and our hand lettered decolonial script runs across the chest. heavyweight fleece in a warm sand colour, made for the cold months.

the meaning

we all come from somewhere. whether you're Indigenous to these lands or your people came from across the water, every one of us has roots. ancestors, songs, languages and ways of living that were carried before us.

even if you've been disconnected. even if you grew up in the city. even if you felt like you never belonged. the land is still here. it never left us.

this design is a reminder that it's our responsibility to decolonize. our minds. our bodies. our spirits. to learn where we come from, to honour whose land we stand on, and to return to the collective.

about the artist

designed by James Desjarlais (Thunderbird), a Cree/Saulteaux artist from Saskatoon, in collaboration with his sister and Decolonial co-founder Casey Desjarlais. James draws on the teachings of his ancestors and elders, believing art can heal and create lasting change.
